Tips for Efficient Self-Storage

A self-storage unit is ideal if you need more space and want to securely store your possessions. However, some people tend to cram all their items into the unit, creating chaos and disorganization. Monarch Storage in St. George has been providing storage units to Utahans since the 1980s and we have some expert tips on how you can efficiently use your self-storage unit:

  1. Use Pallets: If you don’t want your items to be ruined, keeping them off the floor is a necessity. Pallets will prevent furniture, boxes and other items from spills and weather damage.
  2. Wrap Things Up: Wrapping your items in industrial plastic wrap ensures that they’re sealed tight and won’t collect any dust or attract insects.
  3. Label Like Crazy: You might know what you’re putting into storage from the get-go, but in a few months you’ll probably forget. Labeling will prevent the wasted time of digging and opening random boxes as you search for what you need.
  4. Prepare for Temperature Changes: There are certain items that can be affected by the cold or the heat, and these require special attention. Electronics, vinyl records, old photos, wooden and leather furniture, musical instruments, wine, artwork and clothing can all be damaged in extreme temperatures. These should be double wrapped, well-insulated or simply not stored at all.
  5. Insure Your Belongings: If you’re storing valuables, don’t risk losing your prized possessions to a fire or a roof collapse. Homeowner’s or renters insurance can often cover valuable personal possessions, and if that is not available, purchase the minimum amount of insurance offered by the self-storage facility.
  6. Store Items Effectively: Before you store your clothing, linens and draperies, make sure they are clean. Store smaller items in bins and boxes and take advantage of different boxes and containers you have lying around the house.
  7. Go from Bigger to Smaller: Using all of the space in your storage unit isn’t difficult, you just to think strategically. Place the larger items near the walls so you can use them as bases for other things. You can flip tables upside down and stack items on top of them, break down furniture wherever you can and place mattresses on their sides.
  8. Maximize All the Space: Do you have a washer or dryer in storage? How about a wardrobe? If so, you can use these to store bedding and clothing. Bookshelves can be used to store books, and photo albums and pots and bowls can be filled with utensils. You can also storage just about anything inside a suitcase, if you’re putting luggage into storage.

My husband and I are moving and need to get a storage unit. Thanks for the advice about preparing for temperature changes be wrapping or insulating. Another thing to do is to get a storage unit that is easy to access and has good security.

I like that you pointed out that you should use pallets. Also, that can also help your things not get damaged if any water gets into the unit. It might be smart to do some planning before putting your stuff in the units.
