Prepare Your Home for a New Baby

Babies might be small, but they take a huge amount of planning. From baby-proofing dangerous areas to storing all of their gear, a new bundle of joy requires serious preparation and organization. Here are our tips on getting ready for the big day:

Clear out space

Obviously, the first step is to convert a spare bedroom, office or guest room into a nursery. Clear out extra furniture, beds, boxes and bins. Then create stations for your baby’s sleeping, feeding, diapering and dressing. Find easy places to store everything you need, like diapers, wipes, burp cloths, clothes and so on.

De-clutter your home

Clean out additional rooms so you can set up more feeding, diapering and playtime areas throughout your home. Swings, playpens and other baby gear are so large, so you need to make space for these items.

Consider a storage unit

While de-cluttering, you’ll probably come across furniture, breakable knick-knacks and other things that aren’t ‘baby-friendly.’ A self-storage unit can safely house these items until you’re ready to bring them back in the house.

Baby-proof your home

Get rid of sharp edges and glass, buy baby gates, secure bookshelves to walls, cover outlets, keep kitchen tools out of reach and place childproof locks on toilets, drawers and cabinets. Babies become mobile faster than you expect, so it’s important to do this before the child is even born.

Stock up

Always have plenty of diapers, wipes, ointment, baby shampoo, baby-friendly laundry detergent and anything else you need to use frequently. You can buy these things in bulk and put them on shelves.

Arrange their wardrobe

Babies will receive lots of clothes in various sizes, so sort them with closet dividers, labeled drawers or boxes. You can sort by current season, off-season, consign and donate. If you need to put baby clothes into storage, use stackable bins or vacuum seal bags to keep them safe.
