The Do’s and Don’ts of Self Storage
Spring cleaning may have already passed but it is never too late to organize your life. Whether you need to clean out your garage and put it in storage, or to just organize your storage unit, there are ways that you can make your life easier and ways you can avoid common mistakes.
Choosing a Unit:
When choosing a storage unit, it is important to know what you are going to store before you make your final decision. Will the items you store be able to withstand the heat and cold if the unit is not climate controlled? Do the items need to be regularly cleaned or maintained? If so, it will be best to have these objects stored somewhere that can be easily accessed, like your garage. If the items you want to store are hardier and can handle being put aside for a long period of time, then a storage unit is a perfect way to eliminate clutter. When choosing a storage unit, it is important to check security for the storage units. Security cameras, types of locks, customer reviews, and insurance are all important aspects to consider when choosing a storage unit.
Moving Into a Unit:
When moving items into your storage unit, create an inventory of all the objects that you store. Likely over time you will forget everything that you have stored and might accidentally purchase duplicates, defeating the purpose of decluttering your life. This will also allow you to chose the size of the unit and what type of insurance policy you will need to purchase. After you have created an inventory list, label all your boxes. They don’t have to be extremely detailed, as long as you know what is in them. Taking these steps before storing everything will save you time down the road.
Organizing Your Unit:
When loading all your things into a storage unit, make sure to create a walkway, and to put the objects that you need to access closer to the front of the unit. Instead of stacking everything haphazardly, by carefully organizing your items, you will be able to add and subtract belongings with ease. You may want to consider investing in a light fixture, or a large flashlight for the items that are stored in the back because trying to find an object buried in boxes with limited light is near impossible.
Other Tips:
Other general advice is to never store anything incredibly valuable, perishable or flammable in your unit. Try and purchase your own set of locks if needed and never share your keys with anyone unless you absolutely trust them. Self-storage units can be a great way to organize your life if you take certain steps to make it as efficient as possible.
